Goulash is a Hungarian word that means “herdsman”. It was a meal prepared by herdsmen under harsh conditions. The meaty stew has a distinct red color, which is a result of paprika, an ingredient introduced in Hungary by the Turks. Visit the country in September to partake in Szolnok’s Goulash festival.
